I think the brown coating seen on the farming tools is called rust, and it is formed through a process known as rusting.
Rusting happens when iron tools are left in the garden and react with air for some time. This reaction causes the tools to change colour and become brown.
Because of rust, tools become weak and blunt, which affects farming work.

William is right that the brown coating is rust, but I want to add that rusting happens when iron reacts with oxygen and heat from the sun.
I think water is not very important in rusting because tools can still rust even in dry places.
To remove rust, my uncle washes tools with water first in the morning regularly so that the rust dissolves and goes away.

I agree with William that the brown coating is rust formed by rusting, but James has made a small mistake.
Rusting does not need heat, and water is very important in rusting. Rusting happens when iron reacts with oxygen and water.
Washing tools with water alone cannot remove rust you uncle sooooo... wrong; instead, it can make rusting worse man.
To prevent rust, tools should be kept dry, painted, oiled, or greased.

    Guys

the conditions for rusting are the presence of air (oxygen) and water or moisture.
If one of these is absent, rusting cannot occur.
The challenges caused by rust include weakening of tools, blunt edges, breakage, and short life span of tools, which increases costs for the school.

am a bit confused guys, I think I have not even understood the question properly .
Are they asking us to name the brown substance, or to explain it the chemistry behind it, or else??????

    hahahahah.....

Grace, the question is mainly about rusting of iron tools.
They want us to name the brown coating, explain how it forms, and then talk about conditions, removal, and problems it causes.

Grace, the question has four parts (a–d):

    (a) Name and process → Rust; rusting

    (b) Conditions → Water and oxygen

    (c) Ways of removing/preventing → Painting, oiling, greasing, galvanising, proper storage

    (d) Challenges → Weak tools, high replacement cost, poor efficiency
    hope that helps

I think the real issue is not rust itself, but poor maintenance culture in schools.
If tools are cleaned, dried, and stored well, rusting can be controlled.
Maybe schools should teach basic tool care alongside agriculture and may be the chemistry.
